Summer

What do you do during summer?

Growing up we didn't have a regular routine with summer, my parents both worked, we went to camp and we would go on mini summer vacations. But we lived in a smallish town, not a city, so there wasn't really a need to escape. We lived close to the water and had friends that had lakes and boats and so we got good use of those- especially in HS and college when we would basically live on the water during summer!

Now living in the city, summer often reflects a time to get away, especially on the weekends. People in NY own second homes on Long Island, upstate, the Jersey Shore, basically anywhere within a reasonable commute (reasonable for New Yorkers is different than the average)

This will be my third summer in NY and while we don't have any of those luxuries of a second home- we do have a few things to look forward to!

  •    Burlington, VT July 12-15 Ride to Cure Diabetes
  •    (TBD) Husband is turning Four Zero so we need to celebrate
  •    Seattle, WA End of summer - maybe labor day???
  •    Red Hook, Brooklyn- We are starting a new project, I think Red Hook will be lovely during the summer, and with Brooklyn Crab open and next door, it may feel like vacation.
  •    Upstate, NY- spend a few weekends with the McCormacks on the lake- we love ourselves some Cassidy and TT.

I have yet to go to the Hamptons, the jersey shore or some other beautiful beach places along the East Coast, so maybe this summer will bring some surprises with mini-trips for some relaxing.

Time

Lots of time, too much time has gone by since I have been here. But we have been busy, and sometimes it is difficult at the end of long days of work, training, traveling, cleaning, being wife and mom to site down and write. I want to be better at it. I think about it all the time, but as the to-do list grows the blog posting moves to the further from the top. Things that have happened.

  • Went to California to see my family for brother's graduation (Masters) from USC. Stayed at Kate's in the valley, stayed on the beach. Rode bikes on mothers day, but it doesn't count as training. It counts as fun.
  • Had Emma Roses' communion: a first for me (not growing up catholic) but celebrated with a party wedding style for an  Eight year old.
  • Work; enjoying work more and more these days, more responsibility, more creativity, working towards good goals.
  • Rode a bike, many times! Trying to get as many miles on the bike as possible.
  • Went to Noah's Ride (next post)
  • Working on a really exciting business project/plan with husband (more to come...)
Summer has hit us here, it is officially hot and HUMID in the NY area and hopefully I will spend some time indoors in air conditioning updating everyone on my life.

ohhh yes and there are 44 days until we go to Vermont, 46 days until I RIDE!

Our Weekend

We had a great weekend full of getting out and about in our Brooklyn Neighborhood. Definitely domesticated ourselves with a bunch of home cooking and took full advantage of what the March weather had to offer us. We are having a lot of fun in the Durney household!

On Friday night we made tacos with  homemade tortillas- yum!
Saturday, we went to the Library
To the Brooklyn Museum

       To the Farmers Market

Sunday, we made cake pops and then had to decide who to give them to.
And we hung out with our favorite pup Otis- life is good!

Happy Heart Day

Today is Feb 14- a day of love- and although we don't celebrate the comercialized holiday in the Durney family, we always celebrate love. These are my 2 boys, who I love so much! You will always have my heart! - L

Winter came too early!

Out of nowhere this weekend we were hit with Snow, some areas in the region up to 12 inches- let me remind you it is STILL October! We drove out to the in-laws on Saturday, the kids carved pumpkins and worked on their 'Feather me Happy' business while me and my MIL cooked, the boys watched football and Otis tried to get acquainted with everyone- this year the holidays started on Halloween weekend.

Sunday we went for a walk in the park- Otis seems to really love playing in the snow. He is really a happy guy when we go for long walks and he is able to get off the leash- such a little farm boy he is!

summer weekend in fall

Husband and I had a wonderful long weekend. It was full of walking and exploring Brooklyn, knitting blankets for friends, soccer games with the littles, watching movies, talking and car shopping:)
Husband is on a Juice Fast- this is his 5th day of it, I am very proud of his dedication to it. I have no will power so I have been trying to eat mostly vegetables but I have also been drinking wine- because one of my favorite things to do is drink wine while knitting, and I almost completed a blanket this weekend!
This weekend brought extraordinary weather- high 70s and mid 80s it was so wonderful to be able to enjoy the fall with Summer weather- but we also realized we need an auto and so I set out on a mission to figure out what to do, however not I am just more confused than before, it just isn't easy to commit your self to something with a big price tag- good thing I am not searching for a house.
So I am doing some thinking and  hopefully will decide by this weekend what will work that will fit our needs the best- a family of 3 and a dog!
